  • Session 1: Host City Agreements - Working Session with CityAccord and City-to-City

This session seeks to identify the legal risks for International Federations and cities in awarding and hosting major events.  Helping identify risk enables expectations to be set correctly for both International Federations and host cities.  Lawyers can then meet client expectations.

Sub Topics:

  1. Identifying and analysing areas of potential conflict in host city agreements.
  2. What are the most frequent disputes that arise in connection with hosting major events (to include case histories).
  3. Does the risk of disputes vary depending upon the legal system of the hosting country?
  4. Getting the hosting agreement right.  Who should take the risk?  The host city or the International Federation?  What are the key drafting issues for lawyers?
  5. The increasing impact of criminal law and anti-corruption regimes on the impact of awarding of major sports events.
  6. What hosting cities and their legal advisers must understand about the implementation of anti-doping programmes in relation to the events they are hosting.
  7. How to mitigate against litigation risks.  The role of insurance, ADR and dispute resolution, escalation provisions including CAS and ad hoc panels.  The role of insurance and self-insurance.
  • Coffee and Networking Break
