Born on 6 February 1950 in Fribourg, Switzerland, married, four children.
In 1977 Fasel received his diploma in dentistry from the University of Bern. He played ice hockey for HC Fribourg-Gottéron (1960-1972) and officiated as ice-hockey referee with an international license (1972-1982).
Sport administration: Chairman of the Swiss Ice-Hockey League (LSHG) referees’ commission (1982-1985); President of the LSHG (1985-1994); Member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Council (1986); President of the IIHF (since 1994); member of the NOC (since 1992); President of the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF) (since 2002).
IOC functions: IOC Member since 1995 and IOC Executive Board Member since 2008. Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the XXI Olympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010; Member as IF representative of the following Commissions: Olympic Movement (1994-1999), Coordination for the XX Olympic Winter Games Torino 2006 (2000-2006); Member of the following Commissions: Marketing (since 1995), Coordination for the XIX Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002 (1996-2002); “CIO 2000” (1999), Medical (since 2000), 2009 Congress (since 2006), Coordination for the XXII Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014 (since 2007)
In 1997, Fasel was commissioned by the IOC to compile a study on the dental treatment of Olympic athletes at the University of Barcelona, which he concluded with a doctor’s degree in 2008.
In 2004, Fasel was given the prestigious Legion of Honor Award which is the highest award of the French Republic for outstanding service to France. Also in 2004, Fasel was awarded the Ukrainian VIZHIBU prize for significant contribution to the development and popularization of ice hockey in the world. In 2008, Fasel received the Special Award of the Swiss Ice Hockey Association for extraordinary contributions to Swiss ice hockey. |
