Prof. Dr. Helmut Digel is Director of the Institute of Sport Science at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. After having earned a PhD at the University of Tübingen in 1975, he was appointed professor of sport science at the University of Frankfurt in 1979. Following tenure in Darmstadt, he returned to Tübingen in 1999 and since February 2002 he holds the position as Director of the Institute of Sport Science.
Prof. Dr. Digel gave guest-lectures in various countries and universities during his scientific career. He also provided numerous keynotes and papers at various international sports congresses. In addition, he is author of 30 books on sports and sport sciences.
Beside his scientific career, Prof. Dr. Digel who also was a First League Olympic Handball player and coach of an Olympic Handball team, performed several tasks and positions in the organization of sport. In the 1990s he was Head of the Scientific Council of the German Sports Federation (Deutscher Sportbund), Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Germany, and President of the German Athletic Federation (DLV). He was named Honorary President of the German Athletic Federation in 2002. On international level, he has been a member of the IAAF Council since 1995 and he was Vice President (Marketing & Television) between 2001 and 2007.
Prof. Dr. Digel also works as an advisor for the Government of Germany in its international co-operation policy on sports. He received the German Fair Play Price in 1997 and was the winner of the IOC-Presidents Price on Social Sciences in 2000.
